The Prince of Wales Youth Club has existed since 1935 to fight against the exclusion of disadvantaged young people from the structured and disciplined challenges and pleasures that prepare any child for a full productive and happy life. Our aim is to help young people gain new skills to combat issues they face in their ever-changing-lives. We are a fully inclusive group and our aim is to focus on supporting young people to come and not be under pressure to produce high standards. To provide a safe and friendly environment in which Young People can flourish. To deliver age appropriate sessions that will enhance the child’s development and well being.
Joey Wicks MBE says: Over 40 years ago, as a young person seeking a place to belong, I first walked through the doors of the Prince of Wales Youth Club. Back then, I was simply looking for somewhere to be heard, to join in, and to find a sense of community. The club quickly became more than a safe haven—it was a springboard for my confidence, friendships, and aspirations. Those early days shaped my understanding of just how transformative a truly inclusive youth club can be.
Years later, fuelled by gratitude and a strong sense of duty, I found myself returning to the club as a volunteer. I wanted to give something back, to help create the same positive experiences for others that had meant so much to me. Volunteering opened my eyes to the immense value of youth work—the small, everyday moments where a listening ear or a word of encouragement can change a young person’s path. The impact the club had on me as a young member inspired my commitment to ensure others would have those same opportunities.
For the past 25 years, it has been my privilege to lead the Prince of Wales Youth Club. My vision has always been clear: to make sure every child and young person is welcomed, empowered, and valued. We work tirelessly to break down barriers of exclusion, whether they’re financial, social, or personal. Affordability is at the heart of our approach—no young person should miss out because of their circumstances. By keeping our activities accessible, we open the doors to everyone, regardless of background or ability.
Central to everything we do is the belief that participation itself is an achievement. Success isn’t always measured by trophies or certificates, but by the courage to step into the room, to take part, and to raise your voice. We encourage young people to speak up, share their perspectives, and help shape the club’s direction. Their voices matter; their ideas guide us forward.
Our commitment to inclusivity and empowerment has led to some proud moments. In 2019, the club was honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service—a testament to the dedication of our whole team. This recognition belongs to every staff member, volunteer, and trustee who has given their time, energy, and heart to our mission. Their passion and teamwork are the backbone of all we achieve.
On a personal note, receiving an MBE from King Charles III in 2024 was an overwhelming honour. I see this award not as my own, but as recognition of the collective impact of youth work and, most importantly, the incredible young people we serve. Their resilience, creativity, and spirit are what inspire me every day.
I am deeply grateful to every staff member, volunteer, and trustee who has journeyed alongside me. Their unwavering support and belief in our cause have made the club what it is today. Together, we have built an environment where young people are empowered to reach their full potential.
Looking ahead, my commitment remains as strong as ever. I am passionate about continuing to break down barriers, to listen, and to help every young person discover their own sense of belonging and achievement at the Prince of Wales Youth Club. The future is bright, and together, we will keep building a community where every child feels valued and every voice is heard.
Tim Brett says: I have been connected with the Prince of Wales Youth Club for many years and I currently hold the position of President which is a great honour. I believe that this charity provides a safe and friendly environment for children to flourish. I am member of the Canterbury rotary club whilst also holding position as a freeman of the city of Canterbury. I am also the honorary President of Porchlight which is another great charity based in Canterbury. I am now retired having been executive chairman of The Brett Group for nearly 40 years.
Alan Lingham says: I have been the chairman of the Prince of Wales Y.C for the past 4 years but I’ve been on the management committee for over 20 years. I am also the Head Coach of the Canterbury judo club and I am currently 5th Dan but I am about to join an elite standard and will gain my 6th Dan. I had 10 years on the BJA national refereeing panel promoting junior officials into the sport. I have also had the privilege of working on both the 2012 London Olympics & the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games. My main aim & objective is to ensure that we are providing a good quality service along with providing life opportunities for our younger generation. I believe that no child or young person should be excluded from having a happy and productive life. We can achieve this by having a strong and passionate management committee, along with that good staff volunteers and partners.
Jacky says: I have been treasurer at the Prince of Wales Youth Club for 16 years. My aim is to ensure that the organisation remains financially viable so that it can continue to maintain the high level of service it currently provides to the young people.
Bryony says: I have been connected to the Prince of Wales Youth Club since I was a young person myself. I am dedicated to inspire young people and make a positive difference to their lives like the Youth team did to mine. Ally says: I started volenteering at the POWYC in 2023, alongside being a full-time paediatric nurse. I loved youth work so much that I decided to go part-time as a nurse and started working at the POWYC twice a week which was the best decision I have ever made! I love baking and arts & crafts. I want to inspire the young people I work with and am dedicated to making a positive difference to their lives. I also run the social media and I am the safeguarding DSL.
TJ says: I started coming to the Prince of Wales myself as a young person, when I was 7. Since then I have gained knowledge, skills and experience and now work at the POWYC alongside being a Youth Worker at one of our local schools in Canterbury.

Louis says: I started working at the POWYC in October 2025 and have loved it right from the start. I have previously worked for several years helping young people through challenging times in their life and I am currently at the University of Kent studying Psychology. I love anything active and sports related and will get stuck in with every activity we do. I want to bring out the best in our young people and help them achieve the best possible versions of themselves.
